Hi I'm Daniel and I’m the Restoration Placement with the Carbon Landscape Partnership. I’ve been volunteering with the Carbon Landscape for the last 3 years and I’ve been the Restoration Placement since September last year. I have been having a great time and learnt so much that I thought it would be a great idea to share my experiences. I hope to inspire or show anyone that is interested in a career in conservation how great a placement can be and how helpful it can be to get that hands on experience. I have already started to post my weekly updates on the Carbon Landscape social media pages every Friday, but I thought a monthly round up on here would allow me to summarise what I’ve been up to for those who don’t use social media.
Spring is well and truly here and it’s nice to get outside and see the seasons change. Over the last month I’ve been leading hedgelaying work parties on Whitehead Hall. It’s been a great to get the experience of leading groups and I’ve learnt a lot about risk assessment and health and safety as we have had to follow strict guidelines to be able to put on these days. I’ve assisted Tony the Restoration Officer to get some drone footage of different sites and I’ve helped Becky the Assistant Communication officer with filming on Bickershaw. Both these videos will be used to showcase greenspaces around the Wigan area. I have also been facilitating workshops to help to promote the potential for a National Nature Reserve in Wigan and Leigh. It has been great to hear everyone’s opinions on green space across the area and hearing ideas about how to promote more people to use it and engage with the landscape. Finally, I have begun my journey as a member of the Youth Council for Lancashire Wildlife Trust this month. So far I have been using my voice to help influence the future of water management with the Environment Agency and also to help shape the Greater Manchester Nature Recovery Plan.
I am looking forward to going outside more as we move further into spring. My main aims for next month will be developing my surveying skills and taking part in City Nature Challenge. Will you be joining in too?
