Pennington Flash to Bickershaw

Ramble between wetlands

Starting at the car park at Pennington Flash, pass the visitor centre and the children’s play area and follow the path that branches to the right. The golf course will be on your right as you follow this path to the canal. Continue to follow the path until reach the canal, where you will see a Carbon Landscape monolith. Cross over the no. 9 bridge, and take the small path that will bring you out in Common Lane. Continue up Common Lane, then cross over Plank Lane, turning momentarily right, then taking the track on the left that will take you into Bickershaw Nature Reserve. Follow the path past Nevin’s Flash, and across the meadow, then take the left hand fork towards Fir Tree Flash. Passing the Flash, you will head towards the Enda Road Car Park. Crossing the car park, turn left through the gate and head up the straight path. At the junction of the paths, there will be a Carbon Landscape monolith, where you will turn right. Follow this path, then take the second path leading off on the left, towards Diggle Flash.

There is the option to end your walk here. There is space for parking on Smith’ Lane.

From Leigh bus station there is a route that will take you to the St. Helens road entrance. Alternatively, you can walk to Pennington Flash from Leigh town centre via the footpath behind Leigh Sports Viillage.

There are also bus routes that will take you from Bickershaw Lane entrance to Bickershaw Nature Reserve, and the Enda Road entrance off Wigan Road.
