32 students from Leigh college got moving for this year’s big MOVEmber walking event.

This November we wanted to get as many people as possible to join us for a walk of Pennington Flash to launch the Lunchtime Loop as part of MOVEmber.

MOVEmber is a walking event coordinated by Wigan & Leigh College, Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles and The Carbon Landscape Partnership.

Run in November, the event aims to get hundreds of people out for a lunchtime walk of one of their local green spaces.

Warren Turley, Lecturer in Sport said “Staff at Wigan & Leigh College feel the lunchtime loop is a fantastic way to engage our students and staff into participating in more gentle exercise and being more socially active. The walk will allow both our students and staff to enjoy the natural surroundings as well as promoting a healthier lifestyle both physically and mentally.”

Recent access improvement work by Wigan Council, informed by The Carbon Landscape Partnership in collaboration with Leonard Cheshire Can Do Volunteering Project and local disability groups, has opened the Local Nature Reserve up to even more people including those with wheelchairs, zimmer frames and mobility issues.

Jenny Griggs, Carbon Landscape Community Engagement Officer said “It has been great to be working with various partners to get people out and about in their local green spaces. Many people who work at or visit Leigh Sports Village don’t know just how close it is to the beautiful Pennington Flash.”

Getting more people out and exploring local green spaces is one of the main outcomes of The Carbon Landscape Partnership which is working to restore and reconnect key green spaces throughout Wigan, Warrington and Salford for people and wildlife alike. Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles are one of our partners who are helping us to achieve this goal by delivering regular walking events throughout the Carbon Landscape project area.

Richard Smith, Inspiring healthy lifestyles Sports Engagement Officer said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Wigan and Leigh College to get more people out and active within the borough’s green spaces. The one mile ‘Lunchtime Loop’ is perfect for students and staff from the Leigh College campus to enjoy the outdoors over lunchtime as well as local families, dog walkers, running groups and members of our leisure centre.
